ESC Volunteering Project

THE SPIRIT OF ARBORETUM: work for nature

June - July 2021 (approx 10- 12 weeks)

Green thumbs and maritime traditions!

Are you interested in nature and gardening? Would you like to participate in arranging events and activities for locals?

Local Action Group (LAG) Nouseva Rannikkoseutu develops rural areas across seven municipalities in Northern Finland. In this project three (3) volunteers will work in the small seaside town of Raahe (25 000 inhabitants). The town is surrounded by nature and it’s history is rooted in the sailing ship era. The archipelago has become a popular destination.

The volunteers will be mainly working in workshops which are meant for young adults who are facing challenges with e.g. employment, education or life management. Workshops are aimed at training new skills and advancing participation. The volunteers will be primarily working in a workshop focused on nature and gardening but it is also possible to work with themes such as handicraft, media, IT and customer service. In addition, the volunteer will be participating in planning and execution of a city festival and other events that are arranged for everyone in the city and nearby region.

The project starts in May with a virtual week. The activities in Finland start in June and end by the end of July. The exact dates will be agreed with volunteers.

Accommodation, food and transportation arrangements

Accommodation will be arranged in rental apartments (organizers will take care of the renting process). Volunteers will get staff lunch during work days but other times they need to cook for themselves (allowance will be provided).

Distances are short in Raahe: main venues are mainly reachable by foot or bike. If needed, public transportation can be arranged.

How to apply

We would like to receive volunteers who are motivated to work with themes such as nature, gardening, peer guidance and event organizing. Working hours can change according to tasks, so volunteers need to be flexible. Volunteers must be prepared to live in a small city environment in Northern Finland.

Volunteers can apply by sending CV and motivation letter to erja.simuna(a)nousevarannikkoseutu.fi . Deadline for applications is April 9th  2021.

approx. Autumn 2021 (16 weeks), the exact dates will be confirmed later.

Are you interested in working with youth and creating new activities? Would you like to experience a Finnish winter?

Local Action Group (LAG) Nouseva Rannikkoseutu develops rural areas across seven municipalities in Northern Finland. In this project two (2) volunteers will work with young people in the municipality of Tyrnävä in the North Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 6 700, and approx. 40% of them are under twenty years old. Tyrnävä is know for vast fields as far as the eye can see.

Volunteers will participate in the local youth work: joining youth clubs, youth workshops etc. They will work together with local youth to create activities and increase involvement.  Volunteers will also be planning and organising events for and with local residents.

The volunteers will participate in a on-arrival training organized by the Finnish National agency. The volunteers will also participate in Finnish language lessons.

Volunteers are guided to all tasks. The volunteer’s personal skills or interests will be considered and discussed before the project and an individual work plan will be made.

Volenteer profile

We would like to receive active volunteers who are motivated to work with children and young people. Working hours will change according to tasks, so volunteers need to be flexible.
